In the early 1960s, various UK government committees made recommendations on how to begin combatting what it perceived to be the growing threat to the UK from the Cold War spy armies. Now reproduced in the public domain for the first time since 1964, Their Trade Is Treachery gives a fascinating glimpse into the world of secrecy, paranoia and betrayal which was the upper echelons of the British Civil Service during the height of the Cold War. The author
The booklet was commissioned by Her Majesty’s Government, and was produced by the Central Office of Information. At the time, the Security Services commented that the author was “a member of our staff who is a successful author in his spare time”. Commentators argued over the intepretation of this phrase: were they referring to Ian Fleming, or Chapman Pincher, who later went on to publish his famous commercial book of the same name in 1981?
